The section of Ship Hydromechanics is engaged in research with respect to the interaction of ships or other floating structures with the surrounding water and the effect that this interaction has on the operational performance and safety of this structure including the performance and the safety of the systems and the people that are carried by this structure.
The section has a long history of fundamental experimental and numerical research in the field of floating structures. The main experimental research facilities consist of two towing tanks and a novel cavitation tunnel equipped with additional experimental techniques for multi-body motion and flow measurements.
Both its research and education on Ship Hydromechanics is an essential field of interest for the maritime and offshore sector and provides essential contributions to the bachelor and master programmes on Marine Technology and the master programme Offshore & Dredging Engineering at the TU Delft. These programmes are unique in the Netherlands and the research is of high societal relevance for the Dutch shipbuilding and offshore industry in maintaining their present leading positions.
