NWO responds to signals about the impact of COVID-19 lockdown measures on women in science [update: 25/05/2020]

In the last month, Athena's Angels have sent an open letter to the board of NWO, and the Executive Board of FEM network of Maastricht University has released a statement calling for an extension of the Vidi deadline. On 15-05-2020, NWO replied publicly.

NWO says 'it appreciated these strong signals', and has invited both Athena's Angels and FEM Maastricht to further discuss the topic. NWO states it is taking the utmost care to limit the negative consequences of these issues and will continue to offer equal opportunities to as many applicants as possible. The LNVH is in constant conversation with NWO, also regarding these issues, and appreciates the openness of the explanation given in the news statement. LNVH underlines that attention to diversity and inclusion is important in (not) adjusting calls, recruitment, selection and assessment procedures, since the crisis does not have the same impact on all individuals. The LNVH is currently working with The Young Academy on a research proposal for a national study (universities, university medical centers, research institutions) that provides insights to the different impacts of the corona crisis on (the careers of) scientists, with recommendations to restore inequalities.
